Neil's Walk

Neil's Walk

From the Summer of 2005 through 2014, and part of Kingsport's annual Fun Fest celebration, walkers joined their friends and family for a 3K (or 1.86 miles) stroll through beautiful candle-lit streets, ending with a rousing finish inside J. Fred Johnson Stadium. Participants were encouraged to walk "in memory" or "in honor" of a loved one who has suffered from a heart-related illness. Many participants formed teams to support their particular cause.

Neil's Walk served as one of the main fundraisers for the Neil Danehy Heart Foundation, and money raised through this event continues to provide services related to heart health throughout the community.

About Neil

On July 2, 2005 Neil Danehy died suddenly from a fatal heart attack, just two weeks after his 50th birthday. His wife and daughters lost a kind and loving husband and father, and the community lost a tireless volunteer.

Because Neil touched so many people through his years of community and church involvement, the Neil Danehy Heart Foundation was formed to educate the community about heart-related illnesses. Every dollar raised through the Foundation stays in the Tri-Cities area. From educational seminars, free to the public CPR classes, to the purchase of portable defibrillators to be placed in public venues - every effort focuses on the heart health of those in this region.

Save a Heart Saturday

Anytime someone makes a donation to the Neil Danehy Heart Foundation, either through their participation in Neil's Walk or by a direct donation, they can be assured that the money never leaves the Tri-Cities area and will go directly into one of these outreach areas:

  • Save a Heart Saturday - Every February, as a gift to the community, the Neil Danehy Heart Foundation provides FREE CPR and AED training to the first 100 people to register.
  • AED Devices - Area venues, many of which have large crowds pass through their doors, have benefited from the Foundation's donation of AED devices to their locations. The Dobyns-Bennett dome, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kingsport, the YMCA, and the Lynn Garden Senior Center are just a few of the AED recipients. If your non-profit organization is in need of an AED device, contact the Foundation for information on how we can help.
  • Ongoing CPR Classes - The Neil Danehy Heart Foundation, Northeast State Community College, and the Kingsport YMCA have joined forces to provide affordable CPR training at the YMCA on a monthly basis. Participants can call the Y to check availability and schedule a class, (423) 247-9622. Classes are held at the 1840 Meadowview Pkwy., Kingsport location.
  • Customized CPR Training - The Foundation provides funding for CPR events to specific groups. Contact us if your church, civic club, scout troop, etc. is interested in tailoring a program just for you. (For example, providing infant CPR to a group of new parents.)
